How to Answer the "Why Us?" College Essay (Without Sounding Like a Brochure)

Writing the "Why Us?" college essay feels a bit like going on a second date.

The university already knows you like them—you applied, after all. Now they want to know why. And no, "Your campus looks like Hogwarts and you have a great business school" is not the answer that gets you an acceptance letter.

At My Admissions Sherpa, we read hundreds of these essays every season. Most applicants fall into the same trap: they hand the admissions office a copy of their own brochure back to them.

Here is how to skip the generic flattery and write a response that actually lands.

Ditch the "Brochure Dump"

Admissions officers already know they have a beautiful quad, world-renowned faculty, and a great spirit day. Telling a university about its own ranking or weather tells them zero things about you.

• The Generic Trap: "I want to attend NYU because it is located in the heart of New York City and offers incredible internship opportunities."

• The Upgrade: "I want to join Professor Vance’s Urban Economics Lab at NYU to analyze how transit micro-mobility impacts small businesses in Lower Manhattan."

The 50/50 Rule of Campus Fit

A successful "Why Us?" essay is a two-way street. Exactly half of the essay should highlight specific features of the school, and the other half must connect those features directly to your past experiences or future goals.

• Specific Academics: Name 1-2 upper-level courses, specific research labs, or unique academic tracks that align with your major.

• Niche Culture: Look beyond the main student government or giant intramural sports. Mention a specific student organization, publication, or tradition where your personal interests fit right in.

• The Connecting Thread: Frame every school detail around your contribution. Instead of listing what the school gives you, explain what you bring to their academic community.

Do the "Replace the Name" Test

Once you finish your draft, run a quick control test. Swap out the name of the college for a competing university. If the essay still makes total sense, your essay is too vague. Go back and dig deeper into the course catalog, department research pages, and student life portals.

Finding the exact bridge between your story and a college's unique culture takes patience—and usually a second pair of eyes.
